The History

In 1998 the Society of Practising Veterinary Surgeons (SPVS) set up a working party to look into the possibility of developing a postgraduate qualification in general veterinary practice.

After 3 years a meeting was held at the British Veterinary Association in London to invite interested and experienced practising veterinary surgeons to embark on a Masters Degree programme to research how a Certificate in Advanced General Practice should be designed and delivered to the profession. The challenge was taken up by eight experienced practising veterinary surgeons from around the country to work with the Professional Development Foundation (PDF) and Middlesex University (MDX).

In 2003 the Masters Group reported to RCVS and SPVS to recommend the creation of a modular Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (VetGP), as part of a life long ladder of continuing professional development.  The RCVS have considered the results of this research within their design for the new Certificate Programme.

Vet Learning was founded in 2006 to offer the new Certificate and support work-based study and research within the Profession.

On 25 October 2006 it launched its new Certificate programme. It was the first provider to offer postgraduate certificates under the new structure.
